Answering Your Questions About Asexual Homoromantic Weddings in Oklahoma

Asexual Homoromantic Weddings

I have been following the conversation around sexual orientation for years. Recently, I realized that it has never been richer or more nuanced than it is today. Why, you ask? Well, one of the reasons is that today, we celebrate more identities than ever. Isn’t that a great thing? More people are finally seeing themselves in the broader cultural conversation. And while that progress is worth celebrating, there are still communities fighting for recognition, like asexual homoromantic people. As a wedding officiant from OKC, Dr. Tinsley Taylor often has to answer people’s different questions regarding gender identities.

I am sure you also want to know who asexual homoromantic people are. You might also be wondering what their wedding looks like and why they get married in the first place. I will answer all of your questions and more in this article.

Clearing A Common Misconception About Asexual Homoromanticism

It saddens me to see people misunderstanding asexuality. What’s worse, some people dismiss it completely. At its core, asexuality means that a person experiences little to no sexual attraction to anyone. It is that simple. So, contrary to what some people say, it’s not a phase or a medical condition. All it is is a sexual orientation, nothing more and nothing less.

But here’s where some nuance comes into the picture. Asexuality and romance are not the same thing. The reason is pretty simple: asexuality and romance operate on entirely separate spectrums. So, can an asexual person experience romantic attraction? People ask me this question quite often. My answer is always a formidable yes. They can indeed crave closeness, emotional intimacy, and partnership like you and me.

Asexual homoromantic people feel romantic attraction toward people of the same sex. When I tell people that asexual people do not experience sexual attraction at all, there is always a surprised look on their faces. It almost feels like they want to ask how that is even possible. Well, let me tell you that it is, and any experienced premarital counselor from Norman, OK, can confirm.

However, just because they do not feel sexual attraction doesn’t mean they do not desire love, companionship, and meaningful partnership. When you understand this distinction, you will get a clearer picture of asexual homoromantic people.

The Wedding That Defined Asexual Homoromantic Companionship

I recently learned about two men named Steven and Thom who tied the knot in a wedding. They identify as an asexual homoromantic couple. What I really loved about their story is that they did not follow a conventional wedding template. In all honesty, I wish more people did that. Peter and Thom fully embraced their identity, and the result spoke for itself..In case you’re wondering, their theme was playing cards. Some people might find it odd, but I believe the theme fits because the ace card is the asexual community’s well-known symbol. The guest list was deliberately 52 people. The couple chose one for every card in a deck. Some might argue that there should have been more guests. My response to that is: it’s better to invite people who truly cherish you, even if that means a low attendance.

Now, I would like to talk about the decor. It drew from the four suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. The best part was the asexual pride flag-inspired color palette. The wedding videographers from OKC found the attention to detail quite impressive. Who wouldn’t? I mean it’s harder to miss them, and I mean that as the highest compliment.

The Guests Were Supportive and Non-Judgmental

One of the biggest worries of people with different gender identities is that their guests won’t be pleasant. While I agree, there is some truth to it, but more often than not, things turn out just fine. Take the asexual homoromantic wedding I was discussing earlier, the guests were completely supportive. I loved that they went out of their way to wear colors from the asexual flag as a show of solidarity. The couple also chose an open-minded wedding officiant.

Their decisions resulted in a wedding that reflected their identity and choices. You can’t convince me that others don’t want that. I even felt jealous when I learned about the wedding ceremony. In a world where people try to fit into molds, Steven and Thom dared to stand out, and believe me, they succeeded.

There Is More To Marriage Than Just Sex

People are often curious about why asexual people marry in the first place. It usually comes from a place of genuine curiosity. Sometimes it comes from a less generous place. Either way, I truly believe it deserves a real answer. Any marital counselor from Edmond, Oklahoma, will tell you that marriage is not solely about sex. It never has been. It shouldn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that marriage is about partnership and commitment.

Asexual homoromantic couples are not different from us, so they also have all of those motivations. Just because someone does not have sexual attraction for others doesn’t mean they do not need companionship.

It’s Time To Accept That Love Can Show Up In Many Forms

I will wrap things up by saying that the asexual homoromantic community simply wants what everyone else already has. I don’t think that is too much to ask? Everybody should have the freedom to celebrate love and to build a life with the person who matters most to them.
